EN EL BARRIO

Visiting 87 year old Aunt Sally’s home in East LA is always a fun, and calming afternoon. We always end up drinking a ton of coffee, and talking about everything. But most especially, the past. It’s like going back in time, to when life was a lot more simpler. A lot slower. She was much like a mother figure to my father. He was born in that same little house in el barrio. Hard to imagine him being born in that tiny house, let alone having a dresser cabinet pulled out  as his actual crib. Being the blonde baby he was with a head of curls, and big blue eyes (yes, my Latino side of my family were born with the iciest blue eyes ever)…he really stood out, and almost got kidnapped right on that very front yard where Dylana is sitting. Luckily, our grandma called in “Adrian! Adrian!” and grabbed him before the kidnappers got back in their van and sped off. A lot has happened in that house. Aunt Sally still lives there, her Christmas decorations seem to be up all year long, but that’s the charm. And she speaks of my Dad as a baby as a child of her own, and how our uncle was the most handsome actor in the area. The way she looks at my uncle’s photo on the wall makes my heart melt. We love you Aunt Sally.

MAGIC CARPET RIDE

abc-home-natalie-suarez-style-5

Home decor is one of my main inspirations. A beautiful, warm, and inviting home makes you feel good the moment you wake up. Your life just feels more put together, like you can conquer anything. Like most New Yorkers, I have moved a million times in the city. Now that I will finally be making my new loft a real home, I am investing in some really spectacular pieces. ABC Home has always been the store I visit to gather inspiration. The colors so vibrant and beautiful on each floor. Taking me from city to city, bedroom to bedroom, with their artistic and unique displays. I dream of them! But my favorite section is the rugs and carpets on the 6th floor. From the hand-knotted silk pieces from India…rich in greens and yellows, to the antique Tibetan rugs…their red hues just filling a room with warmth. For my loft, I will be playing with a lot more color. My style has always been eclectic and bohemian, but still earthy. Complete with a modern touch.  I can’t wait to finally make home feel a lot more me. A place to get creative. And what better way than starting it off with some beautiful finds brought in from all over the world. ABC Home is having their winter sale, and what a perfect time to move and stock up on timeless, out of this world home goods. I shall be taking a magic carpet ride every day from now on.

THE METALLIC SKIRT

natalie-suarez-1

With fall just around the corner, I’m already taking out my fall pieces. Flannel shirt? Check. Metallic skirt? Check. Yet I’m still mixing in my summer favorites. The off-the-shoulder tops and platform sandals. I love that eclectic style that comes with the in-between stage of seasons. Throwing whatever you’ve got on. A little grunge. A little girly. Completely random proportions that seem to work when you just wing it. Fashion month is ahead, and I’m ready.

Oh, and thank you Mom for the killer circle handbag.

UNDER THE SUN

summer-love-2

It only felt like yesterday that I was rubbing “sunkissed bronzer” over my limbs throughout the winter before even thinking of stepping out the door with my bare legs. With so much traveling, I’m the most sunkissed I’ve been in a really long time. Every time I step into a room, everyone is shocked to see by summer vibes. “you’re so tan!” or “is that blonde?” It’s funny how us New Yorkers notice just an ounce of color. It started with festival season. From the pools of Coachella to camping at Bonnaroo to Governor’s Ball and now only a week until hot, hot Lollapalooza. Then it was the boat rides that came with the Italian sun of Porto Santo Stefano. Along with weekends biking out in Montauk. Oh, did I mention I’m soon to be flying to NICARAGUA?! I can officially say I’ve mastered the naturally glowed look that just comes with plenty of traveling…and plenty of sunscreen! SPF 70 and a sunhat to be exact. Continually keeping cool in nothing but midrift baring tanks, culottes, and studded slides.

Keep updated on the Natalie Suarez tumblr.
