TO THE KEYS

the-keys-8resized

My dream destinations always revolve around a beach bruiser. Key West certainly felt like one of the happiest places on Earth. Just biking through town with your 3 best buds with absolutely no care in the world. Just the sound of the waves, and the clicks from my camera around my neck as I balance that and steer clear of traffic! The sweet taste of piña colada and keylime pie on our lips. It’s about forgetting what time it is. What day it is. And living in the moment. It’s amazing what island life will do you. Your hair, your skin. Not to mention wardrobe. I’ve got a new travel shoe: Sabahs, and I’ve got 5 colors. That, a bikini, a tiny mini by my favorite, Dreamcatcher the Label. Now where to next? ITALY.

LET’S DO THIS GOV BALL

reef-govball-1resized

I have survived yet another FESTIVAL, and this year, Reef and I have been going festival CRAZY. From Coachella and now Governor’s Ball, we have had no problem getting our Rovers down and dirty in the muddy fields. It’s funny how quickly these sneakers have taken over my life. I live for comfort. They’re made for dancing and traveling. We have been #justpassingthrough the East Coast a lot lately. Taking them to the beautiful beaches of Montauk, to the graffiti clad streets of Williamsburg. At Governor’s Ball, we danced to Little Dragon, Florence & the Machine, Tame Impala…and you can’t forget those 90’s classics from Weird Al. Constantly bringing a smile to my face. Between tequila runs at the “Freeloaders Lounge” and checking out the insane amount of food, we found ourselves plopped in the middle of the grass. Blankets, beers, and many festival babes just soaking in that NYC sun. It feels good to have the party be at home. Late nights dancing under the stars before that sleepy subway ride home.

ADVENTURING WITH REEF

mw-reef-17resized

My sneaker of choice are the REEF Rovers. They are EXTREMELY comfortable, and made for running to the beach and strolling the backroads of Brooklyn. My REEF California dream team was in town, not just for our shoot, but for the M.W x REEF celebration! Japanese designer Masafumi Watanabe’s capsule collection for REEF is stellar. Working with beautiful prints, the Rovers in the collection are now lined with his signature designs. Oh, and who doesn’t love a good corduroy sneaker?! Though I wear these with bikinis all summer long, I love to give them a retro feel for OFF DUTY days in the city. Striped tee, leather mini, and some round sunnies.

Just after a night of dancing at Kinfolk to celebrate in Brooklyn, we had an early start the next day. Shooting our Brooklyn and Montauk story, #justpassingthrough with pro-surfer Luke Davis! Take a sneak peek into our travels below.

And we don’t stop. Reef and I will be at Governor’s Ball all weekend long. I can’t wait to cover some killer music and style in the crowds. Be sure to follow along!

90 MILES TO CUBA

keywest-12resized

Key West, just 90 miles from Cuba. For Memorial Day Weekend, we had a major girls trip. We checked into the Gates Hotel and immediately devour strong pina coladas. “Extra shot of rum in that girls?!” Why, of course. A POOL loaded with sunshine was really all we needed, let alone a whole island just waiting for us to explore what it has to offer. So we slipped into our bikini’s, whipped out our books, and worked on our tans in the early hours of the morning. Dylana and I haven’t had any downtime this year, and so we really indulged. Flipping our pages, cocktail in hand. Sunhats and headwraps shading our faces.

Morning and night, we biked into town. Even at 2am, when us girls were already sleepy from a late night dancing at the Green Parrot and even more intense, Sloppy Joe’s, we still managed to hop onto our bikes for that 30 minute ride back to the hotel. I played DJ and blasted the “Now and Then” soundtrack from my phone, making me nostalgic of summers as a kid on my bike, before hopping into bed, sunsoaked from the days adventures. We passed beautiful old colonial homes bright yet faded with age. Quiet. I heard Key West was one of the most haunted cities. But during the day, it’s full of life and color.

The town reminded me of New Orleans meets Las Vegas meets Disneyland. The smell of rum on one’s breath, and skin so tan, you wonder how long the locals spend time playing in the sun. A different cover band at nearly every bar blasting Outkast, or that one-man show taking Bob Dylan requests at the local dive. The Keys was an interesting adventure. From basking on the rocky beaches to dancing deep into the early am, to peering into the haunted inns. Passing Ernest Hemmingway’s old home, we tapped into the history and culture of what was once the Keys. What was once the relaxing retreat for artists from around the world. Still, you can get a bit of that feeling.
