SOMEWHERE IN SQUAMISH, BC

Vancouver may be one of the most beautiful cities in the entire world. You get the mountains, the trees, the lakes, the ocean, the city, and the parks. It’s every wanderer’s dream. I was so impressed with it’s beauty. Everything is right at your fingertips. Whatever mood you’re in, you can get out and go. It’s the ideal place to be outside. To be active. To hike. To bike. But more importantly, to road trip. I was in town shooting the Gentle Fawn S/S ’17 campaign, but like every work trip, we leave a few days to ourselves to explore. We were on the road to Whistler and my friend said “promise you won’t fall asleep!” How could you when you’re driving with the Pacific coastline on one side and waterfalls on another?! It was pretty unreal. We eventually hit a beautiful field of wildflowers on the side of the road. Immediately we pushed the breaks to take a peek. Climbing up the side of the hill brought a bigger surprise. A giant lake circled by a mountain. The early morning fog slowly rolling in through the hills. You kind of have to stop and pinch yourself. How something so beautiful and peaceful exists! We had just passed Squamish…our bouquet of freshly picked wildflowers sitting on the dashboard. We had miles more to go.

MISTICO BRIDGES HEAT

costa-rica-natalie-off-duty-travel-13-3998

This may be one of the most brilliant hikes I’ve been on. Mistico Bridges in La Fortunada, Costa Rica. Our tour guide, Ane, was seriously the cutest. A giant telescope always at hand. Her eyes bright like an eagle…out to spot even the tiniest, most unique of species! She knew every single bird. Every monkey. Every spider. Every frog. Every little snake curled up in a leaf. Her face lighting up every single time she could find us something to take a photo of. “Ooh-ing” and “Aaah-ing” the whole way through. I finally know what a MotMot is…one of the prettiest birds I’ve ever seen. It was pretty spectacular getting so up close and personal with these creatures. Being able to discover things that are so new and removed from our everyday lives. It’s peaceful. With every drip of sweat we grew more energized. Never wanting it to end. I think it’s the fresh smell of the jungle that I loved the most and the excitement of whatever we were to stumble upon next. But it’s the bridges that are seriously magical, hence the name “Mistico”. You’re so high up and intertwined within the trees that you feel like you’re floating on thin air. The hanging bridges slightly swaying with every delicate step. We cooled down from our hike with a picnic, rosé, and a really great outdoor shower. A great plan well executed.

THE HOT NAYARA SPRINGS

costa-rica-natalie-off-duty-travel-49-4395

There is nothing more brilliant than dipping yourself in your very own hot spring pool. From Peninsula Papagayo we hit the road one evening through the sunset to La Fortunado. Our destination? The dreamy Nayara Springs hotel. We arrived just past midnight and woke up to the sounds of a man and his guitar playing Hotel California in the restaurant. Nayara Springs is surrounded by jungle. Hills so lush and so green. Just getting to our room is like going through Jurassic Park. We took it’s narrow bridge surrounded by tall trees decked in twinkling lights up to our casita. But it wasn’t until the crack of dawn that we really got to experience all of Nayara’s beauty. Our backyard hot spring was surrounded by leaves so big you really couldn’t see anything a mile away…maybe just a small glimpse of the volcano. We spent hours in our hot spring pool. The steam worked miracles on our skin. We’re talking baby soft. Just what we needed after days roughing it out surfing in the sun. We started our days with a classic Costa Rican dish of eggs, cheese, wild rice and watermelon smoothies, followed by yoga during the rain. Fully chilled out thanks to the burning incense of palo santo wood and the sounds of the guitar. Want to go on a honeymoon? Go here.

PENINSULA PAPAGAYO

costa-rica-natalie-suarez-travel-37-1869

This gigantic straw hat has been to many beaches with us. From lazy mornings in Miami to here at dusk in Costa Rica. It’s been this close to getting washed away into the ocean that I’m surprised it’s still here in my closet back in New York awaiting it’s next sandy adventure. Here we are just minutes from losing the sun at the beautiful Four Seasons Peninsula Papagayo. The beach so quiet all you could hear was the buzzing from the trees and the crashing of the waves. Pure paradise. New York City felt extremely far away. Suddenly you smell of sunscreen, the ocean, and bug spray. A comforting combination. It’s nice having these photos to soak back in this little moment. When all you need is a beer and your best friend’s shoulder to lean on.
